History of RFDmx
RFDmx was formed in 2002, by a group of close riding buddies, Joel Rayner, Joe Sheppard,Rick Campbell and Ryan Apps. We all met at the local motocross track in Darwin, and shared a passion for having fun on our dirt bikes, be it racing, doing FMX or just playing around. We were all racing at the time, and RFDmx was created, almost as a bit of joke, as a way of separating ourselves from some of the more serious racers around.
From this moment on we've always been on the lookout for riders with a similar approach and love of riding as ourselves, and over the years the RFDmx 'crew' has grown as we've made good friends all across the country.
Riding together all the time has helped push the riding ability of the group, and helped many of our riders reach a level in the sport higher than they may have expected. Riders like Brad Burch, Rhys Hillier and Joel Brown have all ridden Nitro Circus and Crusty Demon Live Shows, and Joel Brown and Joe Sheppard were named Freerider MX Magazines rider of the year in 2009 and 2010 respectively.
In 2004 we held our first RFDmx Ride Day at our compound in Goulburn, NSW. These were basically open invitations to members and friends of the FMXAustralia.com forum to come and ride with the RFDmx crew. The events were a great success, gave us our first taste of organising an event, and also gave many young riders their first chance to hit a ramp, or the chance to make new friends and ride with new people.
In 2007 there were only a couple of FMX comps in Australia, and apart from these there was nothing for the young FMX rider learning the ropes to work towards or to learn from. The Elite of the sport had Crusty Demon shows and demos to keep them in the limelight, but we knew from riding with our friends across the country that there was a huge underground scene of talented riders who had nowhere to showcase their skills. This is why the RFDmx Underground Tour was born, a comp series by riders for riders that gave the up and comers a place to make new friends and showcase their talent. With help from FreeriderMX Magazine and Russell Bros Films the tour was a huge success and names like Rhys Hillier and Brad Burch started to get attention from the industry.
Since then the tour has grown every year, and even went international when the final round of 2009 was held in Dili, East Timor. The amount of interest from riders has grown much more than we ever expected, with over 50 riders entering the various rounds of the revamped 2011 series. The media coverage has grown as well, with strong coverage in various national mx magazines, cover mounted DVD's, and nation wide television coverage on Fuel TV. This has helped turn the series into one of the largest FMX championships in Australia, and deserving of it's new title of the Australian Underground FMX Championship.”
RFDmx's goals for the future are to keep helping the young riders of Australia by providing a platform for them to show their skills, and by sharing our experiences and knowledge that we have gained in the last ten or so years. We want to keep expanding the AUFMXC, and work towards having more large events where the young guys will have a chance to compete against the Elite of the sport, with good prize money and in front of a large crowd. Australia has some of the best riders in the world but really no place at home for them to compete, and we aim to one day be able to cater for all levels of riders, both Amateur and Elite.
We have also started to produce a range of riding gear and FMX accessories, with the aim of providing good quality gear and to provide support for many young riders coming onto the scene. Through our gear Tiger Racing we currently support Rhys Hillier, Joel Brown, Joe Sheppard, Luke Saunders, Ryan Apps, Joel Rayner, Tom Robinson, Adam Grope, Liam Goech, plus many more. We also sponsor many of these riders with our RFDmx branded 'assist levers.'
We have come a lot further and achived more in this sport than we ever expcted, but we feel that we can really help push the sport forward in this country. But most of all, we want to keep it fun, because that's why we ride our bikes in the first place!
